A Pain Survivor Community
Hello. My name is Stacie and I am 53 years old. I reside in Connecticut with my husband, Bob, and our two and a half year old Golden Retriever named Colby. On November 6, 2006 I suffered a terrible fall while I was at work. As a result, I had a concussion and a fractured right knee, as well as multiple bruises. After months of rest, then physical therapy, I was not getting any better. It was then that I was diagnosed with CRPS. My orthopedic doctor was wonderful. He knew immediately what was wrong with me and immediately referred me to a pain management specialist. Since I was injured at work, this became a worker's compensation case, which in itself became a nightmare, as every form of treatment had to be approved by them. To make a long story short, I walk with the aid of a walker and I wear a brace on my right leg. I have difficulty holding things in my hands, and I require a great deal of assistance in doing mostly everything.
I am so greatful that I have found this website. I am learning that I can still have a good life, even with this disease. I have a long journey ahead of me, but I will make it with the help of my family, my friends and the new friends which I have made through Heroes of Healing. I am interested in meeting people who suffer from this awful disease, and learning how you have adjusted to your new life.
Wishing you well,
Stacie

Permalink Reply by Sandy on May 26, 2011 at 8:07pm Hi Stacie - I also live in Connecticut, with my husband Bob and our 4 year old Chihuahua, Sampson. I almost fell at work in 2005, hurt my right ankle severely and went 2 years before Worker's Comp sent me to a knowledgeable orthopedic surgeon (Dr. Aranow). He tried several things, but ultimately surgery was required. During surgery, he had to cut a nerve and when I awoke, I had CRPS. I also fought through the Worker's Comp system in this great state. I walk with a cane or a walker. I cannot tolerate a shoe, and my foot has turned inward. During an ER visit in 2010, a nurse brutally inserted an IV in my left arm and now I have CRPS there, too. I also have sciatica from the way I walk. So - here I am - on SS Disability, mostly housebound, and I'm 51. Nice meeting you - where about in CT are you?

I am so sorry to hear of your injury. The worker's comp system is awful - I have been dealing with it since my injury in 2006. It seems the insurance carrier does everything possible to make life even more miserable than it already is! In addition to my own doctors, I was sent for 19 different IME's .... a bit excessive, don't you think??? I have a wonderful attorney who has helped to get things on track for me. Finally it seems like the carrier is going to do what is right for me rather than fight me. I think the commissioner got really fed up with them. My walker is bright red ... and your's?? We have to laugh or else we will cry. I have finally learned this after all of this time. I live in Ansonia ... where in Ct are you? I, too, am mostly homebound with the exception of doctors appts. And my husband takes me out when the weather is nice. Through HoH, I have met a few people who live here in Ct. It truely is amazing just how many people are forced to deal with chronic pain. Our stories may differ a bil but we all have so much in common. HoH and US Pain Foundation has been a terrific site for me. I have learned alot and met some really nice people.
Very nice meeting you and hope to talk with you again soon.
Stacie
